Repairs

Brakes

Good brakes ensure you and your family remain as safe as possible. Your vehicle may need to stop with little warning, so any issue in the brakes could cause an accident.

Faults with the brake pads, cylinders, shoes and brake discs may increase stopping distance and cause further damage to your vehicle – especially given a slower response time. Professional car brake repairs and using only manufacturer replacement parts will resolve these issues, making your car safer to drive in all weather conditions.

Brake parts have a lifespan and will suffer from general wear and tear, just like any other car component. As one of the most crucial parts of the vehicle, brakes demand professional care once they start to degrade.

Exhaust

With decades of experience, our team can resolve any exhaust issue with your vehicle’s exhaust system. We provide high-quality exhaust repairs for all makes and models, so you can get back on the road quickly, safely and with a high-performing exhaust.

Exposed to high temperatures on the road, your exhaust may suffer from rust, holes or cracks without you even knowing. These will only reduce its lifespan, eventually creating a great deal of noise and further damage if left ignored.

How the Exhaust Works

Made up of parts like the silencer, catalytic converter, manifold and exhaust pipe, the entire system works in harmony with your vehicle to expel harmful gases. The catalytic converter collects these gases, before removing the most toxic elements such as carbon monoxide. This gas then travels through the silencer and the exhaust pipe, exiting your vehicle both safely and quietly.

Any of these components can experience wear and tear just like any other part, causing your vehicle to experience any number of issues.

Do You Need Exhaust Repairs?

The silencer (or muffler) helps to keep noise levels at an acceptable level, and even slight damage could make driving a noisier task. The catalytic converter might also make a noise if it comes loose, sustaining damage when driving over humps or an uneven road. Further evidence that you need exhaust repairs include splits, rust and reduced fuel efficiency. The latter may arise due to a leak in the exhaust system, forcing your engine to work at a higher temperature.

Hazardous emissions or a leak in your exhaust could find there way into the cabin area of your vehicle which can leaving your feeling drowsy and feeling  unwell, also will result in a failed MOT. We can correct any leaks or rust as part of a robust MOT repair service, when you come to us for car servicing, or on a more urgent basis for your continued peace of mind.

Welding

Rust on vehicles can be a problem especially when its comes to your MOT inspection. It can occur anywhere on the body of a car. Indeed, surface rust is often the tip of the iceberg, as it’s common for oxidisation to form inside a panel or part and work its way outward.

The most important thing to look out for is any exterior paint-bubbling. This is often an early sign of rust.

Beyond looking over your car's bodywork, there are a few areas you should pay extra attention to. Check these parts from underneath your car:

  • Frame rails – Run underneath both sides of a car underneath the doors
  • Wheel wells – The curves above your tyres are prone to rusting, especially in older cars that typically don’t have arch liners
  • Exhausts – Your exhaust pipe is exposed to moisture from the inside and outside of the car which can be trapped by mud and dirt
  • Suspension – Tends to make contact with moisture because of its proximity to tyres that can flick up dirt and other elements on the underside of the car

You should also check the following:

  • Floor of the boot – Make sure you pull up any carpet to look for any signs of rust
  • Windscreen – The areas around glass are prone to leaking and greater exposure to moisture
  • Doors – Check inside and out

Here at GB Motors we can take care of most types of welding repairs from patch repair to a full sill replacement, contact us for a quote.

Tyres

Tyres on your vehicle are the only contact with the road you have ,so it goes without saying that they need to be in good order. The minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm on class 4 ie cars and 1.0 mm on class 7 ie vans over 3000 kg to 3500 kg MOT requirement.

Tyre age is also as important, rubber goes hard with age and starts to crack and split. A minibus with a tyre over 10 years old or does not show the age date of manufacture will fail an MOT.

Since November 2014, all new passenger vehicles sold in the EU must be equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

Testing this system can be complex. Here at GB Motors we use the latest Snap On TPMS 5 diagnostics

Tyres sold in UK are required to have their date of manufacture marked on the sidewall. This date is shown as a 4-digit number; the first 2 digits indicate the month number in which the tyre was manufactured and the last two digits the year. The example opposite shows 0907. September, 2007.

Neglecting your tyres is putting your self at risk, keep them correctly inflated with the correct amount of tread and not over 10 years old.

At GB Motors we can supply and fit most brands of tyre with a budget to suit you needs.
